Summer Solstice 2025: What It Means for Crawford County

BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW) June is a month full of excitement across our area. It marks the end of the school year, the start of summer vacations, and, of course, Father’s Day. But perhaps the most fascinating event of the month is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in terms of daylight.

According to the National Weather Service, the summer solstice happens when the Earth’s tilt toward the sun is at its maximum. At this moment, the sun sits directly above the Tropic of Cancer, and its elevation in the sky is at its highest. That means more daylight for everyone in northern Ohio.

In 2025, the summer solstice takes place on Friday, June 20 at 1:41 p.m. EDT. For our neighbors in the southern hemisphere, their summer solstice won’t arrive until December 21.

As we approach this bright and sunny day, here are some fun and fascinating facts about the summer solstice:

  • The word “solstice” comes from Latin and means “sun standing still.”
  • It marks the official beginning of astronomical summer.
  • Each hemisphere experiences two solstices per year: one in winter and one in summer.
  • Cultures around the globe celebrate the solstice with festivals and age-old traditions.
  • The exact amount of daylight we get in Crawford and Marion County on June 20 will be about 15 hours, thanks to our mid-northern latitude.
  • The solstice doesn’t always fall on the same calendar day, it typically shifts between June 20, 21, or 22 due to the Earth’s 365.25-day orbit.
  • Despite being the longest day, it’s usually not the hottest. Ohio’s peak summer heat typically arrives in late July through August.
  • Golf courses in the area often take advantage of the extra daylight with sunrise-to-sunset tournaments, making it a perfect time to hit the links.

While no one knows exactly who first discovered the solstices, their occurrence has been observed and celebrated for thousands of years.

In Crawford and Marion County, the summer solstice is a reminder to get outside, enjoy the sunshine, and soak up the best that Ohio summers have to offer.
