GALION, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—On August 19, Officer Alec Thomas of the Galion Police Department was hailed as a hero after his quick thinking and training helped save the life of a shooting victim during a domestic violence incident.

The incident occurred at 500 Chestnut Place after the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance. Upon arrival, officers were informed that one individual had been shot. Officer Thomas and his colleagues were the first on the scene and found Jaquan Brown inside the residence, unconscious and bleeding from a gunshot wound.

With EMS still en route, Officer Thomas sprang into action and deployed a tourniquet to Brown’s leg to stop the active bleeding. Thanks to his swift actions, Brown’s life was saved, and he was transported to the hospital by Galion EMS.

The Galion Police Department has been proactive in providing its officers with training on treating major wounds in the field when EMS is not immediately available or when it is unsafe for EMS to enter the scene. Tourniquets and field trauma kits are now standard equipment in all Galion police cruisers.

Officer Thomas’s bravery and quick response in a life-threatening situation exemplify the dedication and professionalism of the Galion Police Department in serving and protecting the community.
