It’s been said one can’t appreciate the present until they understand the past and for Bucyrus residents Saturday was a day to look at the community’s past. The Bucyrus Historical Society opened its doors and grounds for its annual Historical Day celebration.
Tonia Hoffet explains visitors could do at the event. “We have reenactors out back. It is open for the whole public to go through and see what we have going on, learn about Bucyrus history, see some of the demonstrations,” Hoffet said. “We also have a couple of the auctioneer’s doing appraisals out back and the Carriage House is open, people can go through there. It’s one of our biggest days other than the bratwurst festival.”
Den and Sue Norton, descendants of Samuel Norton who was one of the town founders, greeted visitors at the door of the Historical Society which was originally the Scroggs House.
“My wife, Sue, and I are greeting people as they come through to see historically what Bucyrus might have been. It was years ago in 1820 and such,” Norton said. “So, the furniture that was brought here and is kind of still a wagon and taking six months to get here from Pennsylvania which we can drive there in one day or less. It’s quite an experience just to see how time has progressed where we began as a family and hoping that it continues. But it’s nice it could preserve and restore in the sense of putting it all together and the rooms that this house was built for. It’s been a great community to grow up in, I can test to that. I kind of wish that our kids had that experience as I did and maybe you did, pretty neat.”
The Scroggs family purchased the lot from Samuel and Mary Norton.
The museum is open from 1 to 4 p.m., April to December, every Monday. Tours by appointment can be made by calling 419-562-6386 and leaving a message. You may also visit www.bucyrushistoricalsociety.org.
