BUCYRUS-According to a press release from the Bucyrus Police Department, Captain Neil Assenheimer will be the new Chief of Police.  Captain Assenheimer will become the ninth Chief in the history of the City of Bucyrus and will be sworn in Wednesday, August 12th at 5 pm at Bucyrus City Hall on the veranda.  All citizens of Bucyrus are invited for this historic occasion.

Captain Assenheimer joined the Bucyrus Police Department in August of 2000 and is a twenty year veteran and has served as a Lieutenant (2005) and Captain (2014) before becoming Chief.  Captain Assenheimer replaces Chief David Koepke who recently retired from BPD.  Captain Assenheimer was born in Bucyrus in 1977 to Lowell and Deanna Assenheimer and graduated from Wynford High School in 1996 and Tiffin University with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice in 2001.  Captain Assenheimer is married to Jessica (Wells) and has one child, Bennett who is ten years old.

Captain Assenheimer has spent half his BPD career as a K-9 officer with canine partners Amigo and Harvey and has a special dedication to the K-9 unit and its unique service to the community.  He is concerned with the effects of illegal narcotics and the drug trade on the citizens of Bucyrus and has pledged to continue the efforts of the entire BPD to make Bucyrus a stronger, safer community through policing, and community involvement.

Captain Assenheimer states, “I’m excited for the opportunity to be the Police Chief in my hometown.  I love this community.  We have a great Police Department here and it’s a privilege to continue my career working as the Chief with our officers and dispatchers.”
