NEW WASHINGTON—One person and a dog were killed in a one-vehicle crash that occurred on Ohio 602, south of Henry-Cooper Road on Friday at 4:36 p.m.

According to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office in a press release Friday night, the initial investigation indicates that a 2010 Mazda was southbound on Ohio 602 and passing southbound vehicles when it crested a hill near the intersection of Henry Cooper Road. The driver swerved back into the southbound lane to avoid northbound traffic, losing control of the vehicle. The car then careened off the west side of the roadway, striking a ditch and shearing off a telephone pole. The vehicle landed in a field then rolled over three times before coming to a stop.

In addition to the driver, there were three passengers and a dog in the Mazda. Two occupants of the vehicle were transported to Bucyrus Community Hospital by squad, one passenger was flown from the scene to Grant Medical Center, and the fourth occupant was flown from the scene to Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

One of the passengers was pronounced deceased at Bucyrus Community Hospital and the dog was deceased at the scene. No names are being released at this time to allow for families to be properly notified. The driver and passengers are not local residents. This crash remains under investigation and further details will be released at a later time.

Also responding to the scene was Portsmouth Ambulance, Crestline EMS, Liberty Township Fire Department, New Washington Fire Department, Chatfield Township. Fire Department, Med Flight, St. Vincent’s Life Flight and the Crawford County Dog Warden.
