BUCYRUS— Past commanders and presidents of the American Legion are being honored on Wednesday at the Colonel Crawford American Legion Post 181 on East Rensselaer Street.

According to organizers, the main reason for the event is to honor and celebrate those who have gone before us serving as commander or president of their respective branch of this organization. There will also be time taken to remember and to honor members who have passed away in the past year with a memorial service.

The Colonel Crawford American Legion Post 181 applied for and received their temporary charter in 1919. On July 9, 1921, the post was granted a permanent charter. In April of 1921, the Colonel Crawford American Legion Auxiliary Unit 181 applied for and was granted a temporary charter. In September of 1991, the present version of the Sons of the Legion was issued their charter, making them 30 years old this year.

Organizers say that it is a great time to celebrate the American Legion Family at Post 181.

“We truly are an American Legion family here at the post as each branch of that family complements and assists the others in all that we do. We depend and thrive on that cooperation to make Post 181 the active vibrant post it is today where all members can feel welcome,” said Alice Teynor in a press release.

Davey Jones of WBCO/WQEL Radio in Bucyrus will be at the event to broadcast it through Facebook Live where the entire community can enjoy the event.

Distinguished Legion guests will include the Department of Ohio Commander Roger Friend, the Department of Ohio President Kristen McLaughlin, Detachment of Ohio Sons of the American Legion Commander Bernie Kessler, Department of Ohio Auxiliary Historian Dayna Beyer and Legion Historian Al Beyer, Detachment of Ohio Sons NEC William “Buster” Sutterlin, Bucyrus Mayor Jeff Reser along with City Service Safety Director Jeff Wagner, the 5th District President Deb Sutterlin and 1st Vice president Jane Yeager, 5th District Officers including commander Ken Estep, 1st Vice Ron Dull, and Finance Officer Bruce Phipps. Several of those officers will be making comments at the event before recognition of Post 181 past commanders, past presidents and past commanders of Squadron 181.

Some past commanders will be receiving their pens from the Department Commander, President and SAL Commander. Reser will also give a presentation during the event that will conclude with the memorial service for those who answered the final call this year.
