BUCYRUS—The Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio will be coming back to Bucyrus on Tuesday, Oct. 13, to distribute food boxes to local residents from 3 to 5 p.m. at Bucyrus High School.

Virginia Hammontree of the Bucyrus Backpack program said hundreds of families have been helped since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Second Harvest has been a wonderful help to the people in Crawford County since the first Bucyrus Distribution on April 13.  Second Harvest knew there was a need, they saw the orders being placed by local soup kitchens, food pantries, backpack programs, and from the reports we have to file, could easily see the increases in these services,” said Hammontree.

She said people should be sure their trunk is empty before arriving at Bucyrus High School, 900 W. Perry St., in Bucyrus, on Tuesday.

Since it is a mobile food pantry, everyone should remain inside their vehicles at all times and the free boxes of assorted shelf-stable food items will be placed in the trunk of each vehicle only as food cannot be placed in the front or back seat areas.

Masks are required to be worn for the event, from registration to the loading of food in the vehicles.

Hammontree has said previously that should anyone be interested in making a cash donation directly to the Backpack Program to help with the growing need for the rest of this year and in preparation of next year, checks should be made payable to Bucyrus Backpack Program, LLC at the Lincoln Administration building for Bucyrus City Schools.

She said the Bucyrus Backpack Program purchases a good deal of their food from Second Harvest.

“They were aware that our program provides weekend meals to students at Bucyrus, Wynford, Colonel Crawford and Fairway school districts and the number of children being served at each location,” Hammontree said. “It was easy to see the need was big, growing, and needed to be addressed. They know how to make things happen in a short time.”
