BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—Brian Gernert has resigned from his position as Bucyrus City Law Director, effective immediately.

Gernert, who took on the role of interim law director in October 2021, has faced a series of legal challenges that have culminated in his resignation. His troubles date back to prior criminal convictions and breaches of professional conduct that occurred before his election to the position in November 2023. Most recently, he was arrested in early August on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence (OVI) in Seneca County. This arrest followed a two-year suspension issued by the Supreme Court of Ohio in May 2025, due to ethical violations stemming from two previous DUI arrests and subsequent probation violations.

Gernert has pleaded not guilty to the latest charge. He entered treatment immediately after his arrest and has been on leave until his resignation. In his resignation, he communicated to the city that he needs to prioritize his sobriety and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve Bucyrus.

In September, the city appointed attorney Brandon Gobrecht to fill the vacancy during Gernert’s absence. Crawford County Now will continue to monitor this developing story as the city navigates the transition and addresses the implications of Gernert’s resignation. For those interested, a copy of Brian Gernert’s letter of resignation is available through the provided link.
